Open-source file compression software for personal computers

FreeArc is a software package that will help users compress specific files into more streamlined formats. This can be useful in the event that an operating system is performing slowly or when large files need to be quickly sent to multiple recipients. Thanks to the open-source nature of this bundle, users will not have to pay for a download.

Primary Functions and Tools

FreeArc is known for its high levels of compression. All technicalities aside, this essentially means that even large files can be modified within a short period of time. Such a feature is not often found in free compression software. Some of the algorithms which are employed during the conversion process include PPMD, LZMA and GRzip. The main benefit of these methods is that the compression ratio will remain the same and therefore, the quality of the file will not be compromised. This is often a concern when dealing with HD videos or intricate graphics.

Additional Options

FreeArc can work with many other third-party compression software packages such as UDA, PAQ, ECM and Precomp. This ensures greater levels of flexibility. It will not require much internal memory or RAM, so it may be a good alternative to other programs that can negatively impact performance levels.

PROS

  • This is open-source software and no type of payment is required.
  • It is one of the fastest file compressors on the market today.

CONS

  • As the last update was in 2010
  • this software is quite dated.
  • It may have trouble dealing with newer types of files.

    Simple, no fuss, works great..
Simple, no fuss, works great.Skeptical after trying out peazip. Peazip has way too many options that no one cares about. 7Zip is too bare minimum. This hits the sweet spot.
